Believe it or not I think about photography 24/7. I think about how I can excel in my craft, how I can make the experience more memorable and what are somethings you may want as a client.

I have an idea and I wanted to see what you think. I want to make and gift a baby log for my Moms. The baby log would cover things such as eating, the ins/outs, sleeping and a place to make notes in ref to baby's schedule or milestones. There would also be a spot for medications, tooth chart, and basic information for the babysitter to fill out to keep everyone in the know.

Would it be something that would interest you as a Mom to receive this?

If so what else would you like included in the baby log?

What size would be too small?

What size would be too big?

Before I go have the baby journals printed up. I wanted to see if there was a need for them. If there is. I would love to gift them to my Moms.

I know for me, I had some serious baby brain, especially when we had the twins. I couldn't tell you what day it was, much less, if I had taken a shower or brushed my teeth. I know eewww dragon breath. I promise, I brush my teeth now but I still might not know what day it is. Hmm that give me an idea. I'll even add a mom page in there too ;)

Ostrich ALERT!!!!

I can't believe that we are going to be leaving our beautiful little island of Okinawa!

Just thinking that in a couple of weeks TMO ( the military movers) will be here to pack us out is too overwhelming. Normally, I'm really great about getting ready for a move. I have a system six months months out we purge the house, 3 months out we purge again and then the last 3 months we set aside what will go with the first shipment and then the last shipment is the larger household goods. Not this time nope. Last night, I was at Jacke's house for a Army Wives season premier pizza party. I could so relate to Roxy last night. I died laughing when she was in the parking lot with a cart full of groceries. I was like that is so me right now... head in the sand like an ostrich in denial.

Keep in mind this isn't my first rodeo like Roxy. I have been a military spouse now for over 15 years but for some reason this move has been a challenge. I'm having a hard time adjusting to the thought of moving away from my close friends. We usually move every two years but this time we have been at one location for 3 1/2 years. Which is a lifetime in military time. I've made some amazing friends from other branches of the military and close connections with friends who are local to Okinawa. I started my photography journey here. There has been so many blessings associated to this tour that I'm not ready for the change.

Of course, with the lifestyle we live, change is a given. We arrive at a new duty station and within a few weeks our houses look like we have lived there forever, we make friendships quickly but they last for a lifetime, we see places in the world only people dream about going to but we get to live there for years.

Am I blessed YES!

Am I excited about our new journey YES!

Will I miss my friends YES

Will I get house ready for PCS.... yes =/

For now, I'll wish for PCS fairies.

Okinawa Photographer - new beginnings

Happy New Year!!!

Welcome friends! It's a NEW year and our family is going to have a lot of new beginnings. We are going to be ending our tour here on the lovely island of Okinawa, Japan this spring. Then we will take a little hiatus to go visit family and friends on the east coast of the United States. After our little down time we will drive cross country to our new duty station at Nellis AFB located in the city that never sleeps LAS VEGAS, Nevada! WoW just writing all of that makes me very excited!

With all new beginnings there are endings too. I'm going to miss all the wonderful people that have been brought into my life due to us being here on Okinawa! This was our first and only chance to be stationed near bases representing all the other branches of the US Military. It has also been a wonderful experience being able to have such an amazing host country. The people of Okinawa will always have a special place in my heart and I will always consider this place my second home. We are now getting ready for PCSing. This is our time to get the house ready, you'd be amazed by all the stuff you can accumulate in 3 years. Spend time with our friends and visit Okinawa's beautiful sites once more. With all the preparations for the move I will be closing up shop here on Okinawa at the end of February. This makes my heart heavy. This is where I started my photographic journey and in all honesty I am so nervous to start all over again. But with all things worth having you must push forward thru the fear. "Keep Moving Forward" has been my mantra for my photographic journey. This year it's going to be "If you dream it. you can do it"- Walt Disney. It's 2012 and I'm claiming it to be an AMAZING year of new beginnings!!

With new beginnings come new goals =)

To keep myself blogging during the hiatus I decided to join Sarah, from My Four Hens Photography, for her 52 WEEKS OF PHOTOS Your project. Your Memories. This is a FUN project for anyone who has a camera. Each week she will post a theme. Then you share the wonderful photo you took with the flickr group. Back in November, I went with my sister and fellow photographer Haruna on our first night out to get the image that showed the light of a new day and the stars of the ending night. With the rain that we have experienced the last month and over cast nights we haven't had much luck going back out to shoot star formations til last night. Well that's what we thought at first. We arrived to our first location and decided against it because we didn't feel safe. SAFETY is first!!! The second location had a huge cloud formation that was blanketing the stars. Plus as you can see from the first photograph we were getting too much light pollution. There was a lot of ambient light coming from the near by buildings. Even though we knew this wasn't an ideal location we decided to stay for a bit and challenge ourselves to take a few pictures to see what we would be able to make with the location we had. As photographers we don't "take" photographs we "MAKE" them. You have to see the location for what it is and find the beauty that is there and capture that. I was really drawn to a cluster of rocks that were close to the shore line. Did I get "the picture" I don't think so but I did challenge myself by working it from different perspectives, and changing the camera settings to see what each setting did to the photograph over all. There's an image there that I saw with my mind. Eventually my skill level will get to the point where I will be able to merge what my mind sees and what the camera sees. To "make" the photograph I will continue to practice practice practice =)

The next three pictures where taken at our third location. This time we were definitely in a darker area of the coast but as you can see we were still getting light pollution. Again we made the best of the situation and "made" some photographs. The last picture is of Haruna light painting as she was taking her photograph.

Did we have fun? YES

Did we learn something from each location? YES

Were we disappointed that we didn't walk away with "the" photograph? No

Why?
Because for me photography is about the moment. I was out doing something that makes my cup over flow with joy, peace and purpose. I was there in the moment and the photographs are there to reconnect me to that moment. When it's long gone from my memory, I will see these photographs and remember how I felt emotionally, mentally and physically. That's what it's about for me the moments that make the journey.

All the photographs are SOOC, straight out of camera. A couple the horizon was straightened other then that no post processing was done. I wanted you to enjoy them as I saw them.

Below is one of my favorites. It's not perfect but that's what makes it my favorite. When viewing this photograph I see the loose formation of a heart in the rocks which represents the love I have for Okinawa and it's people, the pathway between the rocks represent the corrections that need to be made to make it to your destination. Once you make those course corrections there's unlimited potential beyond them. Make the course corrections you need to make to reach your destination because it's just right there off the shore line beyond the rocks.

Now go make your perfect imperfect photograph and enjoy the moments in your journey!!

Ever wonder what someone does on their off time?

Well for me when I'm not taking photographs for clients or for personal projects I crochet.
My dear friend Cassie and her Mom Mimi were the ones who "patiently" taught me how to crochet a year ago and still help me out with pattern questions. Now let me tell you when I first started crocheting I was lucky if the blanket sides didn't come in on itself and start to look like a pyramid instead of a rectangle. Now after a year of persistence I am able to do basic crocheting patterns. And for the most part everything turns out like it's suppose to, most of the time ;)

With the holidays fast approaching I asked Miss R what she would like for me to make her. She stated she wanted a beanie. I was like okay. I thought I would make her a teddy bear beanie to match her winter jacket. A few days later Miss R mentioned that she wanted a lalaloopsy doll. Yeah, for me I don't like those dolls. Maybe if they were actually made out of cloth etc then maybe I would find them cute. But really the first thing I thought of when I saw them was the movie Coraline. Regressing ... Since I knew she was already getting a lalaloopsy from her "Auntie" I decided to make her a lalaloopsy beanie. The below pattern is a hodpog of other crochet patterns I've used from past projects. Hogpog Pattern for R's crochet lalaloopsy beanie

Size I Crochet Hook

Hair Part

chain 5 and join with slip stitch

R1 10 SC loop, join with slip stitch
R2 Chain 1, 2 SC in each SC, continue around, join with slip stitch (20 SC)
R3 Chain 1, 1 SC in next SC, 2 SC in next SC, continue around, join with slip stitch (30 SC)
R4 Chain 1, SC in each of the next 2 SC, @ SC in next SC, continue around, join with slip stitch (40 SC)
R5 Chain 1, 1SC in each of the next 3 SC, 2 SC in next SC, continue around, join with slip stitch (50 SC)
R6 Chain 1, 1 SC in each of the next 4 SC, 2 SC in next SC, continue around, DO NOT join (60 SC)

R7 SC in each single crochet and continue around.

R8 - R15 You'll continue to round without joining. Complete the hair area to the length you want, stop and tie in your next color. (For Miss R's Beanie I did total of 15 rows.)

Face Part

R16 - R 28 Attach the face color of your choice. You will continue to round without joining. Complete the face area to the length you want. Sew in your tail.

To finish the face-
two black buttons for the eyes.
For the cheeks I cut out half dollar size circles from felt material
I sewed the buttons and the cheeks to the face area with Transparent Nylon thread.
For the smile sew with black yarn.

To finish the hair curls.

Chain 60 on the second stitch from the hook 3 SC in each SC , continue til you finish the chain, knot and se in your tail. As you work the 3 SC into the SC of the chain it will start to curl up.

Repeat this 4 times or make more for more curls.

I sewed the curls together in the middle connecting all 4 curl.
Once they are joined in the middle I sewed them to the top of the beanie.

To finish her off add a bow or crown to match your little one's personality.

*Should you want to make the beanie bigger use a larger hook or continue to increase after R6 - ie Chain 1, 1 SC in each of the next 5 SC, 2 SC in next SC, continue around, Join with slip stitch, join with slipt stitch (70 SC)

First let me say, I had a BLAST photographing Kayla and Tom's session. I really think they had a lot of fun too. Tom was very easy going and Kayla made me miss my oldest daughter a lot that morning. Kayla is as beautiful inside as she is outside. Look at those baby blue eyes!! Kayla and Tom brought their fur baby to the session. I actually haven't had a session with a fur baby before so this was going to be all new to me. Believe it or not, I treated it like it was a toddler session. I talked to him and played with him from a far. Of course he ran off a few times and he tried to kiss me and the camera. We had treats to bribe him with and toys to get his attention. He's only 2 so he had the attention span of a toddler. Working fast was a must. The session was a fantastic experience for my first fur baby session and being a child photographer was a huge benefit. Thanks to Kayla and Tom I would definitely do another fur baby session without thinking twice about it.

For this session I collaborated again with the talented, body painting artist, Rosa of art by RoMa. We have collaborate in the past on maternity body art sessions for my Living Art series. This time we wanted to collaborate on something totally different. We brained stormed and came up with the above concept. I was a bit nervous because I'm use to chasing children, taking pictures of radiant Mami's or snuggling with little angels. This would be my first boudoir body painting session. Was it different yes, but I'm glad I worked outside of my comfort zone. A part of honing our skills is to always look for opportunities to grow and change as photographers. This can be in learning new technical skills or changing your subject matter. But always push yourself to grow!

Hello everyone!

This sunset was taken from Okuma, Okinawa, Japan. With us nearing fall/winter it tends to get harder to catch a really clear sky sunset due to all the clouds.

Catching a stunning sunset when it's not expect to is always great. But there are those times where you are going to want to prepare ahead of time. When preparing to shoot for a sunset it's always good to know exactly what time that will happen for your area. The site I use to find out times is time and date. Before heading out to shoot, it's important to know your location prior to the session. Go during the day so that you know exactly what the terrain looks like. This way there's no surprises when you are walking back in the dark. Once you pick out your location allot yourself additional time to arrive before the sunset shoot. Myself, I'm usually there 45 minutes before this way it gives me time to figure out the composition and not rush. Remember that panning the area with your camera and doing test shoots will give you a chance to figure out the composition. Test shoots don't need to be accurate. They are just to see how much foreground, mid ground and background is wanted in the final product. The fstop I shoot at are f8 or f11. If I want everything in focus f22. Another thing I do is take the camera off of auto focus. I definitely advice this if you are a canon shooter. Place your camera on manual mode and set it to infinity then bring it back just a smidge in front of the L bracket for the infinity setting. I love my sunset photographs to look warm so I change my auto white balance (AWB) to cloudy or shady this way the photograph is warmed in camera. My goal when shooting is to do everything in camera when possible. In ref to setting up the exposure, I point the camera at the grass or at the sky away from the sun and set my light meter for that area. Then I reframe to the sunset but I do not reset or change the light meter. A sunset shoot is not very long and you will be very happy you took the time to take test shots first. A sunset will start approx 15 minutes before it's scheduled time and last up to approx 30 minutes afterwards. Then shoot, shoot, shoot! When you think it's over keep shooting because there's always a bit of light change towards the end. The most important thing to remember when shooting is to have FUN!!! Remember if this sunset shoot doesn't turn out, there's always 364 other ones to capture!!

After viewing a Landscape Astrophotography Tutorial - First Night Out from Ben Canales on Vimeo . I ventured out with my sister and fellow photographer Haruna on our first night out at 4:30 am. Yes, that's right the early bird gets it's worm. And I wanted to get my worm =) I hope that you liked my first of many night photography ventures! Make sure to go watch the tutorial! Hello everyone out in cyber space!

It's been a bit quiet here on the blog. I took a hiatus to spend family time with KB who returned from deployment. We have been having a lot of fun being together as a family. I have not forgotten our list ;) I have been working on it here and there but just didn't have the chance to blog them. So here I am!! Since I am currently living on Okinawa there are no fall colors to document because of this some of the items on the list will have to be skipped. The ones I can improvise on, I will and we will get to see how creative and resourceful I try to be to get those photographs ;P

Okay so here are some of the items off our current list!

Okinawa Photographer - Fall Photo Checklist- day 5!

Hello, how are you doing so far on your list? What part of the world are you documenting the fall checklist from?

Our days start off with the sunrise. The alarm clock goes off for Typhoon Trio to get ready for school. I always hit the snooze for an additional 7 minutes. Then I lay there watching out our bedroom window the sky being painted by the sun with pinks, periwinkle blue and red. This morning just after the alarm went off one of the items off the list came to my mind. So I jumped out of the bed and hurried down stairs because I knew the sunrises fast here. In the mean time Miss R is telling me from upstairs "Mami, the colors are so pretty come see" and my camera was still packed up from going shooting last night for star trails. Get it out of the bag and it had the 17 to 40 on it. I went with it since I knew the lens would give me the depth I was looking for in the photograph. In that short time frame I missed the sunrises colors but the sun was still peeking thru the trees. I took a photograph of the door opened but it didn't say anything to me. Just a door. Then Milk Monster came down dressed and like any child he wanted to see what I was so interested in outside our door. As he stood there. I knew that was the shot and I had a second to take it before he lost interest. Comfort Zone.

With anything you do in life you are going to find yourself where you have to make a decision. Do I stay in my comfort zone or do I push myself outside of it. For me I think that those who succeed in anything they do is because they moved forward thru their discomfort. The discomfort doesn't go away but they accept it and go to the next level. Anything you do in life has some form of discomfort. Whether you are moving to a new location, making new friends, learning a new skill or making a decision. So the next time you start to feel uncomfortable. Take a moment, own it and then move forward towards your success.

Okinawa Photographer - Fall Photo Checklist- day 4!

Looking for a tree without leaves. hmm. I really thought I wasn't going to be able to pull this one off. The only trees I have noticed that have lost their leaves have been the Cherry Blossom trees. The ones I had seen the last couple of days were near other lush trees or had busy background that would not make a good silhouette. This morning on my way to the meet up with the hookers from Granny Squares. I saw a row of really nice trees with NO leaves! Yeah!!! And guess what I was prepared I had my camera even better! Here is my "silhouette of a tree that has lost it's leaves"

My camera always sits out on my desk at the house ready to take photographs of Typhoon Trio. Yes, Typhoon Trio doesn't touch it because they are so use to seeing it out. Now in ref to taking it out with me all the time not so much. I usually only take it out with me to go to work or for a specific occasion. Since starting the fall checklist the camera has been going out with me every where again. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed having it with me all the time. It's been great getting to know it again on a personal level ;P

Okinawa Photographer - Fall Photo Checklist- day 3!

Today I looked out my backyard window and saw a great pile of leaves. Not huge mind you because we don't have your typical shedding of leaves here. The trees in our yard actually lose their leaves in the spring time and yes, that does throw me off. The photograph I had in mind for today was going to require models. Best models like cameras are the ones you have with you all the time ;) Mine happened to be at school. Once Typhoon Trio arrived home from school I was a bit side tracked doing household chores. blahh laundry. Of course I don't know what I was thinking when they asked me to go outside. I said sure go outside, then I can finish this never ending pile of laundry. As I was going upstairs I looked out the window and realized "S#!%" they moved all the leaves. I'm holding off on sharing the idea incase I can replicate the location of the leaves. Now I'll share my not so exciting picture of "holding a brightly colored leaf". Man I need to get my nails done ;)

Honing our skills -

When giving yourself or someone else a CC make sure to use "the sandwich technique" First look for something positive about the photograph be genuine, then your constructive criticism and then end it with another positive genuine thought.

Complement- Used proper use of Basic color theory. The red of the leaf is a complimentary color for green. When placed next to each other causes the colors to appear brighter. The use of complimentary colors is aesthetically pleasing to the eyes for art and graphic design.

CC- The leaf (subject) does not pop off the photograph enough. To accomplish this next time I can put more distance between my subject and the background or use a smaller aperture. This way there will be more blurring of the background (bokeh) which will cause the subject to pop.

Complement - subject is cropped using rule of thirds.

Okinawa Photographer - Fall Photo Checklist- day 2!

Did I mention, that on Okinawa the only thing it likes to do is rain? Especially when you want to go outside and shoot. The fall checklist is a bit challenging but we are only on day two. I promise. I'm going to hang in there but I'm going to have to put my own spin on some of the items. Off the list I decided to do "a single leaf on the sidewalk". Milk Monster thought it was funny to sit on my back and bounce up and down like I was a horsey ride while I was trying to take the picture. Lucky for me, my neighbors must be use to seeing me out in the yard with the camera up in trees and crawling around on the ground and shooting at invisible objects because they can't tell I've been chasing a colorful spider for the last 10 minutes in a bush. At least I keep things interesting ;)

Okinawa Photographer - Fall Photo Checklist- day 1!

Yeah!! Today is day one of our fall photo checklist and it's raining, cloudy, dark, gloomy and did I mention wet? After looking over the list I decided to photograph "a close up of a crisp apple". Go into kitchen no apples. So off we went to the commissary for just apples. Once home I went digging thru the house for items to set the photographs. Then I took the pictures of the apples in between down pours.
So, whatcha think about those apples? ;)

One of the things Rachel Devine's book Click! goes over is being prepared. Preparing is about having the right gear for the shoot. Now when I say gear that doesn't just include your camera and your glass. There's a lot of variables involved in putting together a picture. Knowing your camera settings and exposures, setting up the area you'll be shooting in, your environment whether it's inside outside or in a studio, styling by K.I.S.S., SAFETY of your subject and yourself, the lighting whether natural or strobe, composition of the story you want to tell, color (staying close to real life as possible will keep them timeless), framing the subject and last but not least knowing that it doesn't have to be "perfect".

Remember, to have FUN because being in the moment is what it's all about. Documenting it is just the icing on the cake!

First I LOVE love love the fall season but of course we live on the sub-tropical island of Okinawa. It's kinda hard to enjoy fall weather here like you can in colder climates. Of course, you can always get a bit creative by turning down the A/C, making a pot of hot chocolate (don't forget the mini marshmallows) and snuggling under a warm blanket with your favorite movie or book. Since it's not feeling like Fall here. I decided to bring Fall to me. I'm going to use the fall photo checklist to capture fall around me. It's been a while since I've had a chance to shoot. I definitely needed to recharge my batteries. The best way for me to do that is to grab the camera and just be. Doing sunrise shoots are always amazing. Yes, I hate getting up at dark thirty in the morning especially since KB is currently deployed. Even though a Mami needs every little bit of ZZzzzs to survive little ones, sometimes alone time is just as important.

A sunrise can have many different meanings but for me it's that no two sunrises are the same. You can get up every single day and take a picture of a sunrise and you are not going to capture the same photograph. They are all unique and beautiful just like individuals. The other thing is that every sunrises brings me closer to being with KB and having our family together again.

So today we are one sunrise closer to being together!

What do you think sunrises mean to you. What does it evoke in you when you see one?

The above and below picture were taken in the same location. When arriving to a location. Take the time to look around. It's important to remember that there are different perspectives to that location. Had I been just thinking about only shooting the sunrise I would have missed out on the picture that was directly behind me. When on location stop take a few minutes to take in the location ie changing your perspective by getting down low/high, do a 360 of the area and just look.

Okinawa Photographer - Book Review - Click! How to take gorgeous photos of your kids by Rachel Devine part one Intro and Think.

Hello Everyone,

The other day I shared that I was going to do a book review of Click written by Rachel Devine. After reading the intro and "Think" I became a bit nervous because I'm going to be placing myself out there. But really every time I take a photograph and share them with the client or here on the blog there's a part of me reflected in them.

The introduction of the book is written to make you think about who you are as a photographer. I'm sure I'm not the only one that when asked "describe your photography style" You get the deer in the headlights look. Hmm who am I. I first think I'm a photographer, I shoot maternity, newborns, families, travel and the list can go on but really those are all labels things that can change but what are the things about "Denise" as a photographer that don't change no matter what I'm shooting. That's what the following questions are suppose to help me begin thinking about.

1. write 3 words that describe your child photography style?
Answer: personable, fun and happy

Which three words come to mind when you see my work? No answer is wrong so share!

2. Write 3 different words that you would like to describe your child photography style?
Answer: rich in color, storytelling and evokes emotion

3. Think back to the last image of a child you saw or took yourself that moved you. Write down 3 elements of the image that make it remarkable.

Answer: well-lit, simplicity. the moment

Think is about thinking. Rachel goes over experiences so that you are able to challenge yourself to rethink how you approach photographing children.

1. Write out in detail when was your ah-ha photography moment.
Answer: Mine was actually before I ever had a DSLR. My husband gave me a Canon P&S just prior to him deploying. At the time Typhoon Trio were babies and I knew that they would all go thru many changes during his time away. I wanted to document everything that he was missing out on. It didn't matter if the picture was perfect it was about catching the moment. I knew how much he loved the pictures. The photographs not only gave him a way to see how Typhoon Trio was changing over night but they kept him being apart of our daily lives.

2. List the elements you consider essential to making a great image.
Answer: light, emotion, connection

3. Think about your shooting style and identify the areas you would like to work on.
Answer: Shoot less, in-camera exposure, focus and recompose

Breath in exhale.... okay that wasn't as painful as I thought it was going to be ;)

Are the technically perfect maybe maybe not but they are of her and that makes them perfect to me =)

Okinawa Photographer - Book Review - Click! How to take gorgeous photos of your kids by Rachel Devine

Hello Everyone!

On Thursdays I saw a post on Digital Photography School that Rachel Devine had released a book. I was very excited! I thought it was the book that Rachel and Peta Mazey had started 2 yrs ago. At that time I had just met Rachel thru her online pilot workshop that later became known as Beyond Snapshots. On Friday, I sent Rachel a quick note stating that I wanted to review the book for the blog. Rachel stated that would be awesome.

I figured I would sit down and knock out the book and have a review of it the following day.

That didn't happen.

I started off with the introduction which went over Rachel's background as a child photographer and how she had been shooting that genre for 16 yrs. I knew some of that from previous research and being her student. After the introduction the book is broken into sections think, prepare, smile, refine, research, push, look and remember. I didn't make it past think. I have now read "think" 3 times. Not because I don't understand it but because like seeing a great movie you want to see it again because you feel that maybe you missed something important. So far an AMAZING read. really. I feel like I'm sitting with Rachel on the sofa chatting over a cup of (insert your poison here) wine sounds good about now ;) Which of course I love it because it's not dry like some photography books can be but Rachel is not talking above your head if you have little photography knowledge.

After reading "think" I decided to review the book a little differently than planned. The book is setup so that at the end of each chapter you'll have questions to consider related to the information just read. I am going to review each section and share my answers here on the blog.

If you're wanting a book starting with the camera and photo basics, but then filled with an entire second section of photo inspiration for photographing life at all stages. Ryukyu Siisaa

Since arriving to Okinawa I have been fascinated with the Shisa (シーサー) Okinawan siisaa. I love how they come in all shapes and sizes. I'm currently working on a photography essay of the different variations found on Okinawa. The Ryukyu siisaa are a variation of the fu dogs of China. According to an article written by Saito Michiko, Kin Kannonji is one of the eight shrines of the Ryukyu Shrines. The shrine was built during the time of King Sho Shin (1478 - 1526), Kannonji was rebuild in 1939. The trees that stand on the property are said to be 300 to 400 years old. There is also the Kin limestone cave which is located right below the shrine. The cave is not only a place for worship but the Kin Brewery cellar for awamori.

Next time I'll make sure to go when they are open so I can take some pictures of the cave and the awamori cellar. The Kannon Chaya has great tea there too.

Fukushu-En Garden is located in Naha City near Kokusai Street. Even though Fukushu-En is located in the busy downtown area of Naha City the park is peaceful and quiet. This is one of my favorite locations for photography sessions. Photographer Haruna Leong, with Kawaii joined us for today's trip. The weather was super hot so we knew the little ones weren't going to last very long in this heat. My goal was to capture two shots. The one of the gazebo and one of the tower ceilings. I'm planning on going back once the weather isn't so hot here to do a storytelling shoot of the location. Till then enjoy the above photographs.

From the military bases, travel south on Highway 58 into Naha City. Once past Tomari Port on the northern side of the city, look for signs to Kumoji Crossing. Turn right off Highway 58 and Fukushu-En is about 100 meters from Hwy 58 on the left. A Hot Spar Convenience Store is a good landmark to your left at the intersection. Coming off the Expressway, the park is about 30 minutes drive. Go south to Highway 329 and turn right. At Highway 58 Asahibashi Intersection, turn right and go six blocks north to Kumoji Crossing. Today we decided to go over to Murasaki Mura over in Yomitan Village. On the way back on Hwy 6 I noticed a sign for Toya Port. I've heard in the past that it's a great place to watch surfers. As we were turning I caught a glimpse of the below view. It's one of those times which I really wish I had a sign on the vehicle that says "CAUTION: This vehicle stops frequently for photographs" Of course we stopped ;) While I was standing on the road railing holding on for dear life to a sign to take the photograph. I noticed a little walk thru down to the beach area below. Of course we had to go. So Milk Monster and I went down the trail. We were pretty excited that we went down there because we came across some beach bums hanging ten ;) Check out their colorful boards too.

Today we went and visited Fukushen Gardens in Naha City. The last time we were in Naha City we visited Matsuyama Park. It has a little wooden playground area and a shaded walking trail. I tried to take pictures of the above statue because I believe the best camera is the one that you have with you. That day it happened to be my iphone. Which wasn't my favorite choice for the day since the pictures did not come out. So, today I made sure I took a couple of pictures of the beautiful statue. I tried to find out the name of the statue or who made it. Unfortunately, I'm making a post and having to say I have no clue but here it is ;)

WoW, we survived Papi being deployed this summer. Typhoon Trio we're very excited this morning! K & R started the first grade and Milk Monster was going to get one on one time with Mami. As you can see he was not at all excited about that plan. He had different plans and was going to join K&R in their room. When the class lined up to go in Milk Monster joined them too. Of course I was on Mami mode and forgot to change the settings for the inside of the room but I was able to save the picture of him finding himself a spot. Then of course once he saw R find her seat he just had to go sit next to her too. K & R said their goodbyes to Milk Monster even though he was not happy about the idea. He kept saying "I'm big boy now. I go to school too" We all mange to finish off the day great! K&R really like their new teacher and have friends from previous classes in there too. Even though Milk Monster isn't going to get to go to school with K&R. He is getting to go explore Okinawa with me =).

The early bird gets the worm...

Well is 4 am early enough ;)

Fellow Photographer Haruna Leong, which is the model in the second picture, and I decided we were going to capture the sunrise from a top of Katsuren Castle. Even though Typhoon Trio wake up with the sunrise as it 4 am was still a bit early for me. It still was an incredible experience capturing this sunrise. There will never be one like it again. Just like there will never be another me or you. So make sure to appreciate yourself because you are the only you!

"The Katsuren Castle ruins are located on the Yokatsu Peninsula along the eastern coast of Okinawa Honto. The castle was built on a steep hill close to the coast and offers nice views of the surrounding are. The castle is best known as the former seat of the popular Lord Amawari." - japan-guide

The above images where taken facing the Henza, Miyagi and Ikei Island. The Katsuren Castle with the Pacific Ocean on two sides, is also called the "Ocean Gusuku".

This picture was a fluke. I wasn't looking to take anything I was actually going outside to wrap the garden hose up since it was out. As I was wrapping the garden hose I noticed this little web moving around like crazy. There really wasn't a reason for it to be moving as it was. It wasn't windy. As I squatted down to finish wrapping the hose. I notice that the spider was having almost what looked like convulsions. Each time she would have on of theses "contractions" a little round egg would be added to her growing sac. The egg sac reminded me of a bunch of grapes. Immediately, I was reminded of Charlotte's Web. The moment brought back a fond memory so I wanted to share it with you. Since I don't have a Macro, I worked with what I do have I used my 24 to 105 and racked it out to 105. And tried to find the sweet spot on the focus. It took me a few tries but this was the best I could do without a macro.

BTW does anyone know what type of spider this is?

This morning's plans were to go on an outing to Fukushen Gardens. Mother Nature had other plans so we went with the flow and ended up at Mona Kid's Jungle in Naha. Of course Typhoon Trio liked plan B a lot better. Typhoon Trio always have a lot of fun when we go there. They get to run off all their bottled up energy which is always great for Mami later on that night =)

OMG this time I even had so much fun. After taking a few pictures of Typhoon Trio playing it was my turn to play in the ball pit.
